The Parliamentary Commiitttee on Commissions, Statutory Authority and State Enterprises (COSASE), today had a continued interface with Kampala Capital City Authority political and technical leadership, over queries raised in the Auditor General’s Report for FY 2023/2024.
Amongst the concerns raised by the committee was the implementation of the Disaster Risk Management Plan for the City, and the handling of the aftermath of the Kitezi Dumpsite disaster.
Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago informed the Committee that compensation for the victims who were left destitute following the Dumpsite disaster had not been effected despite his concerted efforts to have them settled from the Shs.16.1B funds allocation in the wake of the disaster, payments have not been forthcoming with reference made to the Office of the Prime Minister to have taken charge of managing the process.
He further notified the committee that funding has not been provided for installation of a modern Waste Management and Recovery facility at the newly acquired site, causing further risk of turning the new site into yet another Dumpsite.
He called for stern action against KCCA officials who were involved in theft and the subsequent selling of two Weigh Bridges in Rwanda from the Kitezi dumpsite and, hiring of equipment at astronomical sum of Shs 3.7B annually, he urged Central government to allocate funds for KCCA to purchase own equipments.
The Chairperson of the Committee Hon. Medard Sseggona, committed to follow up on the concerns raised for further action by Parliament.
