The judiciary has confirmed that the bail hearing for Dr. Kizza Besigye, veteran opposition leader and former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) president, has been scheduled for Friday, August 8, 2025, at the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court.
Besigye was remanded last week following his arrest during a protest in Kampala, where he and several activists were demanding action on rising living costs and alleged government corruption.
He faces charges related to unlawful assembly and incitement to violence.
His legal team, led by counsel Erias Lukwago, filed for bail on grounds of his deteriorating health and strong personal sureties. Lukwago insists that the charges are politically motivated and meant to suppress legitimate dissent.
“This is a continuation of state persecution against Dr. Besigye for exercising his constitutional right to protest,” Lukwago told journalists outside court. “We are confident that the court will grant him bail and allow him to receive medical attention.”
The state prosecution has indicated it will oppose the bail application, citing Besigye’s “history of repeated offenses” and “potential to incite public unrest.”
The upcoming hearing is expected to draw significant public interest, with political supporters and human rights groups closely watching the proceedings. Security has been tightened around the court premises ahead of Friday’s session.
Dr. Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate and long-time critic of President Museveni’s government, has been arrested multiple times over the years for leading protests and challenging government policies. His detention has once again sparked debates over political freedoms and civil rights in Uganda.
