Nigerian dancehall star Patoranking has opened up about the pivotal role fellow musician Timaya played in launching his music career, revealing that his rise to fame was shaped by mentorship, support, and opportunity at a critical moment in his life.
In a personal account shared widely on social media, Patoranking recounted first meeting Timaya in 2009 before reconnecting with him two years later. According to the singer, the 2011 meeting proved life-changing, coming at a time when he was struggling to survive and searching for a breakthrough in the competitive Nigerian music industry.
Patoranking said that upon visiting Timaya at his residence, the senior artist challenged him to prove his talent by recording a “sweet song,” insisting he would not leave without demonstrating his ability.
At the time, Patoranking revealed he was living in a ghetto and could not afford basic studio costs, rent, or food.
“He paid for my studio sessions, my food, and allowed me to stay in his house,” Patoranking said, describing the support as a turning point in his life. He added that Timaya later moved with him from the mainland to Lekki, where they continued working together and hustling musically.
It was during this period that Patoranking recorded Alubarika, the song that would later become his breakout hit and propel him into national and international recognition.
He said the success of the track marked a dramatic change in his life and career.
Reflecting on that journey, Patoranking described Timaya as an instrument of divine intervention.
“If Timaya wasn’t there—if he didn’t pay for that video or let me stay in his house—I wouldn’t be here today,” he said.
