Uganda Wildlife Authority Ranger Killed in Line of Duty

Tragedy struck the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) on November 4, 2024, when Private Olara Jonathan, a dedicated ranger, was fatally shot during an encounter with armed poachers in Kidepo Valley Conservation Area.

Pte Olara, stationed in the Karenga Community Wildlife Area, was on patrol when he came face-to-face with the poachers. His courageous service and commitment to protecting Uganda’s wildlife will be deeply missed.

UWA has extended heartfelt condolences to Pte Olara’s family and loved ones, pledging support during this difficult time.

“This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers involved in conservation work and the courage of the men and women who defend our wildlife and natural heritage,” said a UWA spokesperson.

UWA has vowed to intensify efforts in combating poaching and illegal activities threatening Uganda’s wildlife and ecosystems. The authority is working with security agencies to apprehend and prosecute Pte Olara’s killers.

The incident highlights the risks UWA staff face daily in the field, particularly in areas prone to illegal wildlife activities

UWA urges all Ugandans to support efforts to combat poaching and wildlife crime, standing united to protect the country’s natural treasures.

Investigation Ongoing:

UWA is collaborating with security agencies to track down and prosecute the perpetrators.
