Rukungiri – Kanungu Road Project Set For Completion By 2023

The ongoing works along the Rukungiri-Kihihi-Ishasha/Kanungu Road project (78.5km) is now at 72.6%. The project is funded by African Development Fund (ADF) and Government of Uganda (GoU) and is being constructed by China Henan International Cooperation Group Co.Ltd.

The project consists of civil works for upgrading the existing gravel surface road from Rukungiri to Ishasha and Kanungu to Kihihi (78.5km) to bitumen standard with carriageway width of 7.0 meter and 2m wide paved shoulders.

Additional parking lanes are to be provided in built up areas and drainage structures comprising of bridges, box culverts of varying dimensions, pipe culverts and lined/unlined side drains.

Once complete, the project will improve road access to socio-economic facilities and quality of transport service levels in the South-Western parts of Uganda.

It will also improve the standard of living of the beneficiaries by providing support to the tourism industry, promoting regional integration and cross border trade with Democratic Republic of Congo.
