Mathias Mpuuga Attacks Speaker for Enforcing Decorum in Parliament.

The leader of Opposition in Parliament Hon. Mathias Mpuuga Nsaamba has attacked the Deputy Speaker of Parliament for mistreating opposition lawmakers.

This comment follows the suspension of 5 lawmakers over allegations related to indescipline.

‘The Rt Hon. Thomas Tayebwa read a plethora of directives intended to enforce decorum in Parliament.” Mpuuga said adding that While Tayebwa preached strict adherence to the House’s Rules of Procedure, they have noticed an abuse of the Rules by state operatives – the military surrounded Parliament, vehicles similar to those they used in 2017 when they brutally dragged us out of Parliament during the #AgeLimit debate were deployed, TV stations that usually broadcast #PlenaryUg were denied access to the signal feed. The live stream on YouTube was also put off!

He noted that the environment was toxic! Members were going to debate under duress citing that they opted to stay out.

Earlier, we had a meeting in Rt Hon. Tayebwa’s office between our side and the regime’s side but it ended in a stalemate.

“We demand that an extensive debate on disrespect of Human Rights be allowed, we demand that our leaders must be respected, we also demand that the government makes a commitment to end the violation of the rights of Opposition leaders and supporters.

We have notified the Speaker that we’ll return to the House tomorrow to present a detailed statement in which we’ll highlight the unanswered questions on murders, disappearances and other forms of human rights violations.
