The National Unity Platform Principal Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine has expressed gratitude for the United Kingdom’s decision to impose sanctions on Ugandan officials involved in corruption.
Among those sanctioned are Anita Among for serious corruption and two ministers for embezzling iron sheets meant for Karamoja. Bobi Wine welcomed this decision, seeing it as a response to the cries of the Ugandan people for accountability and justice.
Bobi Wine presided over the launch of the NUP Party Structure Formation Roadmap and the commencement of a nationwide membership registration drive. This event followed a two-day retreat organized by the NUP to re-train Constituency Registrars, District Focal Persons, and Sub-regional Focal Persons.
In his address, Wine urged Registrars to carry out their duties courageously, diligently, and fairly, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the interests of the people over personal gain.
Omubanda Wa Kabaka reminded the attendees that the NUP serves as the political wing of the People Power movement, while they represent the organizing wing of the NUP.
“Your role is to mobilize widespread support for change across the country, aiming to remove President Museveni from power and pave the way for a new Uganda characterized by freedom and opportunity.” Bobi Wine said.
Expressing gratitude to the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for their support in organizing the event, Wine highlighted the importance of international collaboration in advancing the cause of democracy and accountability in Uganda. UK Member of Parliament Alex Sobel, Lab & Coop MP for Leeds North West, had previously announced the UK government’s decision to sanction corrupt Ugandan politicians following discussions held in Parliament with Bobi Wine.
Sobel expressed satisfaction that the UK government had heeded the calls made by MPs and the Ugandan community, demonstrating a commitment to combating corruption and promoting good governance globally.
According to Bobi Wine, the UK’s sanctions underscore the significance of international pressure in addressing corruption and holding accountable those who abuse their positions of power in Uganda. He claimed the NUP remains committed to championing the aspirations of the Ugandan people for a transparent and accountable government, and welcomes further international support in this endeavor.
