The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has updated the country on the progress of the works at Katonga Bridge along Kampala- Masaka road.
In a statement issued on 04th/09/2023, UNRA revealed that buses are now free to use the route that has been under rehabilitation from 3rd March this year.
It has been established that the bridge can withstand a load up to 30 tonnes in addition to the light vehicles that have using the road for a while now.
“ All permitted vehicles are advised to follow the signage at the place to allow proper flow of traffic at the safe approach distance towards the bridge.” Part of the statement reads.
It should be noted that while inspecting the progress of works at the bridge in May, the UNRA Executive Director Allen Kagina said that the swamp has been designed and prioritized in the maintenance program.
“The section will be raised above the flood water level, widened and concrete box culverts will be fixed to ably drain the large water volumes to the downstream without affecting the road usage,” she said.
Katonga River section is 3.6km long connecting the districts of Gomba and Kalungu, however, during rainy seasons the river floods and the road is cut off but this plight will soon become history following the robust efforts being done by UNRA.
