UK Minister Lord Collins In Uganda to Reinforce Commitment to Sustainable Development

Lord Collins of Highbury, the UK’s Minister for Africa, concluded a two-day visit to Uganda on April 4, 2025, aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and promoting sustainable development.

During his visit, Lord Collins announced the launch of the UK-Uganda Growth Dialogue, a quarterly series of discussions focused on boosting trade and investment between the two nations.

The UK-Uganda Growth Dialogue will address commercial deals, business environments, and economic policies to identify opportunities for growth and collaboration. This initiative is expected to unblock barriers to trade and create new avenues for partnership.

Lord Collins also visited areas of UK investment in Uganda, including Zembo, a leading e-mobility company. With financing from UK Innovate and the Private Infrastructure Development Group, Zembo has accelerated the adoption of electric motorcycles, reducing carbon emissions and saving boda drivers up to US$500 annually.”My visit to Uganda reaffirms the UK’s unwavering commitment to building equal partnerships that supporting sustainable development and drive mutually beneficial economic growth in the region. We are dedicated to working closely with our Ugandan partners to achieve shared prosperity and a brighter future for all.” Lord Collins of Highbury stated.

Additionally, Lord Collins and Uganda Airlines co-hosted a reception to celebrate the new direct flight from Entebbe to London Gatwick, marking a significant milestone in strengthening trade, tourism, and people-to-people links between the two countries.

The minister also visited the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI), which has received over £25 million in funding from UK universities and the Medical Research Council.

UVRI has made significant breakthroughs in HIV/AIDS treatment, Ebola research, and disease surveillance, demonstrating the successful partnership between Uganda and the UK.
