The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has launched its 2026 annual Half Marathon, returning this year with a renewed focus on supporting the families and children of fallen wildlife rangers.
In a message posted on the authority’s official X account, UWA said the event will kick off activity for 2026 “with a cause,” emphasising both conservation and community support.
The marathon is part of UWA’s ongoing efforts to honour the sacrifices made by its frontline personnel and rally public participation behind wildlife protection causes.
The event slated for 1st March at Kitante Primary School aims to raise awareness about the risks faced by rangers in protecting Uganda’s biodiversity and to mobilise resources for education and welfare programmes targeting the children of those who have died in the line of duty.
UWA, the government agency mandated with managing Uganda’s wildlife and protected areas, regularly engages communities and stakeholders through such initiatives as part of its conservation strategy. Its broader mandate includes safeguarding national parks, reserves and wildlife sanctuaries, while promoting sustainable tourism and community involvement in conservation.
Events like the Half Marathon also serve to highlight the role of wildlife rangers who often face dangerous conditions combating poaching and habitat incursions and to strengthen public support for their work.
