Uganda Prisons Service Partners With EU on Managing Violent Extremist Prisoners

The Uganda Prisons Service, in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime’s Eastern Africa Section (UNODC_EA) and the European Union in Uganda (EUinUG), has launched a comprehensive training program for prison officers in the Eastern Region.

The initiative aims to enhance the capacity of over 400 officers across 19 administrative regions to manage violent extremist prisoners, prevent radicalization, and rehabilitate inmates for successful reintegration into society.

Commissioner of Prisons (Safety and Security Operations) Simon Alex Ben Wansadha emphasized the critical role prison officers play in combating radicalization. “Prison officers are frontline defenders against radicalization, and this training will equip them with essential skills to prevent and counter violent extremism.”

The program aligns with the Ugandan government’s efforts to combat terrorism and ensure citizen security.

Key objectives:

  1. Enhance capacity to manage violent extremist prisoners
  2. Prevent radicalization in prisons
  3. Rehabilitate and reintegrate prisoners into society

This initiative demonstrates Uganda’s commitment to addressing the root causes of radicalization and promoting community safety.
