Please don’t buy beer, use cash for food – Prime minster Nabbanja appeals to vulnerable Ugandans

Rt Hon Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has appealed to beneficiaries of the Covid-19 relief cash to use the funds for its intended purpose.

While speaking at the ceremony to launch the exercise July 8, Nabbanja said the government hopes to save life.

“Please use the funds to purchase food. We appeal to our people that the funds should be used for their intended purpose. We are trying to save lives. Let them use the money to buy food for their families”, she said.

Nabbanja hailed the president for the initiative saying it was his idea that the vulnerable must be helped.

“This shows that the president is caring”, she added.

Meanwhile, Minister of Gender Betty Amongi explained that disbursement of cash intended delayed due to scanty data from local authorities.

By Wednesday afternoon, only Entebbe, Kira and Gulu municipalities had been able to partially finish the process and submit part of the lists of their beneficiaries.

Government named bus and taxi drivers plus conductors; baggage carriers, touts, wheelbarrow pushers, traffic guides and loaders in tax and bus parks, stages and other areas like Kikuubo.

Others are barmen, DJs, barmaids, waiters, waitresses and bouncers, gym and restaurant workers, food vendors in tax, bus parks and arcades, musicians, comedians, producers, promoters, salon and massage parlour employees, teachers and support staff in both government and private schools but are not on payroll, car washers, slum dwellers, street vendors, shoe shiners, orphans and vulnerable children.

Over 500,000 households are targeted in this exercise.
