Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Tuesday morning sat to vet Hon. Justice Dr. Flavian Zeija, who has been recommended by His Excellency the President to serve as the next Chief Justice.
The vetting session was chaired by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, in line with the constitutional process required before a presidential appointment to the country’s top judicial office is finalized.
During the proceedings, members of the Appointments Committee examined Justice Zeija’s professional qualifications, judicial experience, integrity, and overall suitability to lead the Judiciary.
He responded to questions on his record on the Bench, judicial independence, access to justice, and strategies for improving efficiency within the courts.
Justice Zeija has been nominated to replace Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo, who recently retired after serving as Chief Justice.
At the conclusion of the vetting, the Appointments Committee is expected to prepare and submit its recommendations to the President for a final decision. If approved, Justice Zeija will take over leadership of the Judiciary at a time when stakeholders are calling for reforms to address case backlogs and strengthen public confidence in the justice system.
