MTN MoMo has reaffirmed its commitment to Ugandan sports by renewing its strategic partnership with the Uganda Rugby Union (URU), as both organizations prepare for the highly anticipated Rugby Africa Cup 2025. The announcement, made during a joint press conference this week, also marked the official launch of ticket sales for the tournament, with fans now able to purchase tickets seamlessly via the MTN MoMo platform.
The renewed partnership aims to bolster the growth of rugby in Uganda through financial support, digital innovation, and fan engagement. The collaboration will also ensure smooth and secure mobile money transactions for fans purchasing matchday tickets, merchandise, and in-stadium services.
Speaking at the event, MTN Uganda’s Chief Marketing Officer, Mr. Somdev Sen, emphasized the company’s long-standing support for sports in Uganda. “MTN MoMo is more than just a payment solution—it’s a lifestyle enabler. We are proud to continue supporting the Uganda Rugby Union as they work to elevate rugby in the country and prepare for this prestigious continental tournament,” he said.
Uganda Rugby Union President Godwin Kayangwe echoed the sentiment, praising MTN MoMo’s role in expanding the reach and professionalism of the sport. “This partnership represents a major step forward for rugby in Uganda. The support from MTN MoMo allows us to improve our infrastructure, invest in grassroots development, and offer fans a better matchday experience,” he stated.
The Rugby Africa Cup 2025, scheduled to be held in Kampala, will feature elite teams from across the continent vying for regional glory and qualification to global events. Uganda’s national team, the Rugby Cranes, is expected to be a strong contender, drawing on local talent and growing fan support.
Fans can now access early bird tickets through the WPS-powered platform and the MTN MoMo app, offering convenient and cashless payment options. Ticket pricing tiers have been designed to make the event accessible to a wide range of supporters.
This partnership renewal underscores the powerful role that digital financial services can play in sports development, fan engagement, and national pride. As the Rugby Africa Cup 2025 approaches, Uganda is poised to deliver a world-class tournament experience both on and off the field.
