Gen. Tumukunde’s treason case adjourned, 17 coordinators remanded

Presidential aspirant Lt Gen Henry Tumukunde Thursday appeared before KCCA Court in regards to the standing treason and illegal possession of firearms charges.

His case has been adjourned to 23 September 2020.

In March this year, the same court remanded the former Security Minister following his arrest by a combined team of security personnel.

After reading out the charges, magistrate Valerian Tuhimbise ruled that the retired army officer would be allowed to access his medical doctors while on remand.

This followed Tumukunde’s utterances in a series of radio and television interviews, which seek to foster hatred that might lead to inter-community violence, fomenting and glorifying violence in general.

It is alleged that in addition, Tumukunde called on the support of a neighbouring country to support him in removing the current leadership with or without the ballot.

Coordinators jailed

After spending six days in police detention, 17 coordinators of Tumukunde’s “Renewed Uganda” pressure group were Wednesday arraigned in a Wakiso Court and formally charged with doing an act likely to spread infection of a disease.

The members denied the charges.

They are: Frank Kigozi, a mechanic; Mathias Kato Mawejje, a businessman; Mr Gabira Gonzaga, a teacher; Ivan Kazibwe, a systems administrator;  Robert Birungi; a teacher; Lawrence Ssempa Ssebuuma, a mechanic; Tophar Nalikiriza, a matron, and Sylvia Kickyankya, self-employed.

Others are: Ms Gorreti Batenga, a businesswoman; Musa Ssenyonga, a salon attendant; Ashraf Ssendegeya, a barber; Ivan Kayondo, a teacher;  Stephen Ankunda, a businessman and Nanfuka Namusisi, a businesswoman.

Prosecution alleges that the group on August 13 in Nansana Municipality, Wakiso District, knowingly or having reason to believe that it was likely to spread the infection of a disease dangerous to life, unlawfully and negligently gathered in a meeting.

They were arrested a day after Gen Tumukunde launched his pressure group for the 2021 elections for violating the guidelines for control of Covid-19.
