Government Spokesperson Ofwono Opondo has issued a scathing critique of the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) implementation of its policies, citing poor planning, corruption, and abuse of power.
According to Opondo, the NRM’s agenda has always been correct, noble, and genuine, but its execution has been marred by inadequacies and deliberate distortions.
This, he argues, has led to mixed results and embarrassment, despite the party’s 38-year dominance in Uganda’s politics.
“The NRM’s conception, planning, funding, execution, implementation, supervision, and monitoring have been half-hazard, inadequate, and sometimes deliberately distorted through abuse and corruption,” Opondo stated in an opinion article published on the Uganda Media Center Website.
He further noted that the party’s noble agenda has been disrupted by a weak and disorganized opposition, both within and outside parliament.
“The nascent, but rising chaotic noise of a perennially unserious and ever-tiny opposition, has in the recent past been able to drown, disorient, derail, and sometimes even defeat NRM’s noble agenda,” Opondo observed.
The government spokesperson’s remarks are seen as a rare admission of the party’s shortcomings and a call to action to address the systemic issues undermining its agenda.
