The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has swiftly distanced itself from Mercy Bashisha, the woman accused of assaulting Traffic Police Officer Charles Makawa while on duty.
Bashisha, who claimed to be a Public Relations Officer (PRO) at the NRM Secretariat, was arrested alongside companion Bernardine Abangira following a viral video showing the altercation.
However, NRM spokesperson Emmanuel Dombo denied any affiliation with Bashisha. “We would like to clarify that Ms Bashisha is neither a PRO nor a staff at the NRM Secretariat. She has never been a staff member and is unknown to us,” Dombo stated.
Bashisha and Abangira face charges including robbery, reckless driving, failure to comply with police orders, and operating a vehicle without third-party insurance. They were remanded to Luzira Prison until November 4.
The NRM condemned Bashisha’s actions, emphasizing that assaulting law enforcement officers will not be tolerated.
