The leader of Opposition in Parliament Hon. Mathias Mpuuga has broken the silence on the alleged deal with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to have lawmakers Allan Ssewanyana and Muhammad Ssegirinya freed from detention.
Speaking during a local radio interview on Thursday evening, the Nyendo-Mukungwe Member of Parliament took time to clean-p the allegations eating up the nation left, right and center.
Mpuuga stated that the struggle has been infiltrated by self-centered individuals whose aim is just to pursue individual gains through blackmail and insults.
“I don’t have to negotiate with anyone over issues of justice. Our brothers Allan Ssewanyana and Ssegirinya Muhammad like any other native have a right to get justice and this is the precedent that was used by court to free them from Kiggo prison where they have been detained for over 18 years.” Mpuuga said.
Mpuuga insists he never met president Museveni and there is no way the opposition should negotiate the release of political prisoners because they are never consulted prior to their illegal arrests and the law needs to take its cause.
“I have met different meetings with government officials like the Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, the government Chief Whip Hon. Hamson Obua and the State Minister of Security Hon. Jacob Oboth Oboth. I met these different officials with the opposition Chief Whip Hon. John Baptist Nambeshe, Chairperson of Buganda Caucus Hon. Muwanga Kivumbi and my other Ministers like Hon. Abdulah Kiwanuka. All that was discussed in these meetings is on record and in the hansard.” Mpuuga said adding that he wonders what the motive of such people.
Mpuuga insists that people in the struggle need to remain focused and ignore rumors of people that are spreading falsehood to achieve individual gains.
He says that some people need to accept to led if the opposition is take over power from the armed regime of the National Resistance Movement.
“People need to distinguish between a National Unity Platform supporter, Voter, Member and leader before making multiple allegations. I know there those on payrolls to insult other, spread lies and attack able boded leaders but as a people interested in a fundamental change, we need to remain stronger united to build our party.” Mpuuga said.
