The Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), in partnership with key stakeholders, has officially launched the Rwenzori Tourism Destination Management Plan (TDMP), marking a major step in positioning the Rwenzori region as a competitive, sustainable, and inclusive tourism hub. The launch was announced at a media briefing held at the UTB offices in Kampala.
The press conference was addressed by UTB Chief Executive Officer Juliana Kagwa, representatives from the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, private sector leaders from Kasese District, and the Centre for the Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries (CBI), an implementing partner.
Highlighting the uniqueness of the Rwenzori Mountains—famously known as the “Mountains of the Moon”—Kagwa described the range as a treasure of snow-capped peaks, diverse wildlife, and rich cultural heritage. She emphasized that the TDMP will provide a structured framework to harness these resources, improve visitor experiences, and ensure communities benefit from tourism development.
Private sector representative Kiiza Alex from Kasese applauded the initiative, noting that the plan addresses persistent challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, limited promotion, and fragmented coordination among stakeholders. He pledged that local operators and communities are ready to collaborate to secure sustainable growth.
Speaking on behalf of CBI, Country Lead Martjin Harlaar underscored the organization’s role in capacity building, product diversification, and expanding market access. He stressed that the TDMP aligns with global best practices and will unlock opportunities in eco-tourism, adventure tourism, and community-based tourism.
The launch attracted wide media interest, with journalists seeking clarity on how the plan will directly improve accessibility, service quality, and visitor safety in the Rwenzori region.
