
Football fans across Uganda are counting down to the return of Spain’s premier football competition as the 2026/27 La Liga season kicks off from 14–16 August, bringing another year of elite football, fierce rivalries and compelling storylines.
The new campaign promises one of the league’s most competitive seasons in recent years. Barcelona begin the season as defending champions after winning back-to-back league titles under Hansi Flick, but will face renewed competition from a strengthened Real Madrid, an ambitious Atletico Madrid and several clubs entering exciting new eras.
For Ugandan supporters, La Liga remains home to some of the world’s biggest football stars and most watched clubs. This season delivers several compelling narratives that are expected to dominate conversations among fans throughout the country.
Barcelona will be chasing a historic third consecutive league title after reinforcing their squad with Anthony Gordon, while Real Madrid begin a new chapter under the returning José Mourinho. The Spanish giants have also strengthened significantly through the arrivals of Marc Cucurella, Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries and Bernardo Silva.
Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid continue to position themselves as genuine title contenders following the signing of Morten Hjulmand, while Athletic Club and Villarreal enter the season under new management, adding further intrigue to an already competitive league.
The league also welcomes the return of three historic clubs. Racing Santander are back in Spain’s top flight after 14 years, while Deportivo La Coruña and Málaga return after eight-year absences.
Now in its 96th edition, La Liga will once again feature 20 clubs, each playing 38 league matches, with Barcelona opening their title defence against Athletic Bilbao during the opening weekend.
