Masaka’s biggest music export Dj Ssuuna Ben brought the house down at the Nyege Nyege Festival with his electrifying set, defying expectations and captivating the urban-centric crowd with the local ‘kinyanyanyanya’ sound.
The festival, now in its 9th edition, is renowned for promoting outsider music, primarily electronic, by African artists. This year’s lineup featured an impressive array of talent, including Joe Joewi, Recho Rey, Tai Dai, Mwami, Denesi, and Ssuuna Ben himself.

As Ssuuna Ben took to the turntables, the crowd’s initial curiosity quickly turned to frenzy. Urban dwellers, typically accustomed to more mainstream sounds, enthusiastically embraced the rural rhythms, waving branches, sticks, banana leaves, crates, and flags in abandon.
The infectious beats proved irresistible, and revellers danced through the night, surrendering to the unique energy of the ‘kinyanyanyanya’ sound. This unexpected adoption of rural norms added a captivating layer to the festival, highlighting the power of music to bridge cultural divides.
Ssuuna Ben’s performance served as a testament to the festival’s mission to celebrate African electronic music and promote cultural exchange.

As the Nyege Nyege Festival continues to grow in popularity, it’s clear that Ssuuna Ben has cemented his place as a local DJ sensation, and his ‘kinyanyanyanya’ sound will be remembered as a highlight of this year’s event.
