Justice Byabakama Issues Warning to Bobi Wine Over Campaign Violations

The Electoral Commission (EC) has issued a stern warning to National Unity Platform (NUP) president and presidential aspirant Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, over alleged violations of electoral and campaign laws.

EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama made the warning following the receipt of a police report detailing at least 62 alleged electoral offences linked to Kyagulanyi’s recent campaign activities.

The offences reportedly include breaches of campaign guidelines set out under the Presidential Elections Act and directives issued by the Commission.

According to the EC, the reported violations range from holding unauthorized campaign meetings, failing to adhere to agreed campaign schedules, and disregarding public order and safety guidelines.

Byabakama said such actions undermine the integrity of the electoral process and could compromise peace and fairness during the campaign period.

“The Commission has taken note of the repeated violations attributed to the candidate,” Byabakama said. “While we have so far exercised restraint and offered guidance, continued disregard of the law may compel the Commission to take decisive legal action as provided for under the electoral laws.”

The EC emphasized that all candidates are subject to the same rules and that no individual will be treated as being above the law. The Commission urged Kyagulanyi and his campaign team to strictly comply with electoral regulations to avoid sanctions that could include suspension of campaign activities or prosecution.

The warning comes amid heightened political activity across the country as candidates intensify their campaigns ahead of polling day. Kyagulanyi’s campaign has previously accused security agencies of selectively enforcing the law and frustrating opposition activities, claims that government and the EC have repeatedly denied.
